X frame rustic dining set $1,000
The table top is 60” long by 32” wide. The surfaces have been given some rustic charm by sanding with a rotating bristle brush which removes more of the softer summer growth than the hard winter growth. Made from solid pine which has been stained and protected with three coats of Saman floor varnish. The table comes apart by loosening some bolts. The X frame design combines a rustic appearance with strength and rigidity.
Treasure Chest / Toy box $500
The first of these was a present for my grand daughters pictured below and not included in the sale (trust me the novelty of their company would wear off quickly). The box is 36” long by 24” high and 18”
The box is 36” long by 24” high and 18” front to back. It can accomodate a lot of toys. Kids love to climb over and hide in this and, who knows with training, they may even put their toys away in it. The lid stays are high quality German made Hafele with adjustable tension so that the lid does not slam down on little fingers.
There are hand openings along the front and at the ends, these serve dual puposes; lifting/handling and if playful little Johnny imprisons his darling little sister in the box she can breathe fresh air and you will hear her screams. Made from 3/8 inch Baltic Birch plywood and finished with three coats of Benjamin Moore Advance paint and an overcoal of floor varnish. I wondered just how strong the coopered lid is so before I installed the lid on the first of these boxes I had my 250 pound buddy jump up and down on it – our verdict is the lid is adequately strong as in he did no damage!
Market Stall / Lemonade Stand $400
This is an educational toy. Kids can learn about displaying wares, selling, customer service and counting money. Not included: grand daughters and all the wares their Mom arranged on the shelves.
The market stall folds at piano hinges along both sides to save space when it is not in use.
Blanket Box / Hope Chest $2,000
This chest is made from Walnut and Maple and has a lining of aromatic cedar on the floor and inset to the underside of the lid. It was displayed in the Southern Alberta Woodworkers Society biennial exhibition of fine woodworking. The contrast between the light coloured maple and the dark walnut shows off the chest’s fine dovetail joinery.
The aromatic cedar lining smells lovely and repels moths which might otherwise damage blankets and linen stored in the chest.
The sculptured lid with its inset aromatic cedar lining is art in fine woodworking.
